This service is for students whose current study permit may expire before they finish their studies, or who need a new permit because of a change in their academic situation.
IRCC states that a student who wants to continue studying at the school named on the permit should apply for an extension at least 30 days before the current permit expires. Study permit extension applications are generally made online from inside Canada.

Restore your student status
If your study permit has already expired, an extension and restoration are different from an application submitted before expiry.
A person who applies after the permit expires may remain in Canada while the restoration application is considered, but cannot continue studying until student status has been restored and a new study permit has been issued. In general, restoration must be requested within 90 days after losing status.

Key Canada Study Permit Requirements
To ensure a successful application, make sure all core documentation is complete, accurate, and consistent:
Letter of Acceptance
A letter of acceptance from the designated learning institution you plan to attend is generally required. For post-secondary applications, the school may be asked to validate the letter directly with IRCC.
Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter
A provincial or territorial attestation letter—usually called a PAL or TAL—is required for many study permit applicants. It is normally obtained through the designated learning institution after the student accepts the offer and, in many cases, pays part or all of the tuition requested by the school.
Proof of Identity
Applicants normally provide a valid passport or travel document and any other identity evidence requested for their situation. Accompanying family members must also provide their required identity documents.
Proof of Financial Support
Applicants must show that they have enough money, without relying on employment in Canada, to cover:
- Tuition fees
- Living expenses for themselves and accompanying family members
- Transportation to and from Canada
Letter of Explanation or Study Plan
IRCC recommends a letter explaining why the applicant wants to study in Canada and showing that the applicant understands the responsibilities of an international student.

Proof of Funds for a Canada Study Permit in 2026
Financial evidence is one of the most important parts of a Canada study permit application. IRCC assesses both the amount available and the source of the money.
For applications submitted on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant studying outside Quebec must show at least CAN$23,448 for first-year living expenses. This amount does not include tuition or transportation costs. The required amount increases when family members accompany the applicant.

Not exactly. A study permit authorises an international student to study at a designated learning institution. It is not a travel document.
